Review Jubei Chan Secret of the Lovely Eye patchWritten by WarpshadowRating very good

There are shows that are really good because they have an exceptional quality to them and there are shows that are really good because they succeed in multiple areas. Jubei Chan might not be what you would call exceptional but rarely have I seen a show that had so little bad stuff in it.

Over 300 years ago Yagyu Jubei was the greatest swordsman of the nation but there was one foe he could not beat, old age. On his deathbed Jubei charged his retainer Koinosuke with finding his successor, someone with plump and bouncy bon bons (or bonnie boom boom bum if you watch the dub). Fastfoward to modern times Jiyu Nanohana, although her father calls her Jubei, is going to a new school. On her way home she runs into Koinosuke who gives her the lovely eye patch, and object that can give Jiyu all the sword skills of Yagyu Jubei.

Jubei Chan is an example of an unambitious anime show that nonetheless is very well put together. While this show at first glance looks like a magical girl show, fast paced sword fights replace the stock footage magic wand fights that dominate that genre. Not all of the show is action based as there is plenty of humor flowing from the sizable and very wacky cast. This is not to say that the show can’t take on a more serious tone from time to time without feeling disjointed. In short Jubei Chan is a show with a bit of something for ever6ybody and is well worth watching.
