One rule of media is that almost everything of popularity will have some sort of sequel. Another rule is that these sequels usually aren't that good. The Ninja scroll television series is a show that follows these rules.

Jubei Kimagami is a wandering ninja who has gotten caught up in a fight between two warring ninja factions. He has no idea what is going on but accusations and the promise of a dying man entrap Jubei in the feud. The focal point is a normal seeming woman named Shigure which an entire village dies defending. It is said that she is the light maiden but not even she knows what that title means. It is up to Jubei to defend her from the forces that threaten her though.

This television show attempts what the original movie did in the course of 13 episodes. This fails for two reasons; the first being that the animation for a television show is generally lower than that of a movie and secondly there pacing issues to deal with. Most episodes deal with setting up the monster of the week and then having Jubei fight them which feels very languid in comparison to the original movie. I usually don't pay attention to the background music in a show but the music for Ninja scroll was especially tinny and sounded like some amateur banging away at a synthesizer. As the show's grounding in action suggests there isn't much in the way of character development beyond the occasional flashback and monster of the week characters are occasionally more rounded that the mains. Unless you have some particular need to watch every fighting show out there this is a show that can be conveniently forgotten.
