The story of a young girl who fights nasty aliens is something that is eternal in anime. It may not be at it’s best in Iria but it still is fun.

Iria is an apprentice bounty under studying under the tutelage of her brother Gren. The latest missions that they are given is to rescue the crew of a spaceship that has gotten into trouble. When they arrive they find that all of the trouble is happening because of the cargo, a monster known as Zeiram. Zeiram turns out to be a pretty tough cookie as neither Iria or Gren can put much of a dent into it. As a last ditch effort Gren blows up the ship with Zeiram still on it, killing them both, probably.

Even though it is technically an Oav referring to Iria as an action movie is pretty close to the mark. As such this packed with fight scenes and only slightly more plot and character development than needed to string said fight scenes together. This is not to say that Iria feeling all that lacking in terms of story it just knows it wants to head to the next alien fight as soon as possible. The animation is the sort of well done cell work that makes old school anime fans long for the old days. In my tenure of being an anime reviewer I have grown a bit jaded about Oavs but Iria is something that I can heartily recommend for at very least a rental.
