The Sakura Taisen movie is a franchise movie and a bit more arcane than most. However if you can crack it’s shell there is a metaphorical creamy caramel center to be enjoyed.

The girls of Tokyo’s flower division are busy girls having to divide their time between saving the city from demons and performing in plays. However things seem to be a bit quiet on the demon front which is good since the group’s leader Ogami is out of town. However things aren’t going to stay that way for long as two new Americans come to Tokyo, Lanchette who is eager to learn the ways of the flower division and Douglas Stewart who is developing a weapon to replace the flower division’s Kohbus.

The Sakura Taisen movie is a clear example of what I call a franchise movie with the usual warning that this is probably not the best way to first view Sakura Taisen (also known as Sakura wars). My warning is a bit stronger than normal as several things including the outcome of the battle forming the climax will not make sense to the uninitiated. Other than that I found this to be a decent movie especially since many of the Sakura Taisen anime media available lack a good fight in them, especially the Oavs. The movie is overall fairly enjoyable and a movie that manages to combine a couple of musical numbers with steam punk mecha action can’t be that bad.
