A lot of anime movies are pretty looking pieces of rental material and Origin Spirit Of The Past is part of that category. If the animation doesn’t blow you away don’t expect the plot to do so.

When a mutant plant species was let loose on the Earth it overwhelmed human civilization. What was left was a smattering of scattered villages and small nations who had to bargin with the forest for the water they needed to live. Agito who lives in neutral town is one boy in such a world. One day while trying to avoid punishment from a bout of mischief he finds and wakes up a girl in cold sleep. She is no ordinary gril from the past but instead someone with a secret powerful enough to change the world.

The first thing one may notice about Origin Spirit Of The Past is that it is a science fiction movie with stunning graphics and an environmental message. On the animation side of things the movie delivers and is the movie’s strong point. The message side of the movie doesn’t fare as well as it falls back on cliché elements to tell the story. Certain things such as the powers that Agito gains half way through the movie throw philosophical monkey wrenches into the movie’s works. The result is a mishmash of a plot that looks like it was trying to copy Miyazaki but failed in that attempt. In the end Origin provides little but an hour and a half of pretty and brainless eco-fun.
