If you assume that a franchise movie needs only to remain fairly faithful to the original spirit of the franchise and to entertain it’s core followers for an hour and a half then this movie accomplished what it was supposed to do.

Luffy and his Straw Hat pirates are always eager to pursue an adventure but this time adventure comes to them. When Luffy and Ussop fish a strange man out of the sea they think nothing of it or of his strange power to change his face but their friend Vivi finds that for some reason that he can inpersonate her father, the king of Alabasta. That man is only a part of the plot by the evil pirate Crocodile to take over the kingdom. That is if it the Straw Hat Pirates don’t stop him first.

This particular One Piece movie is a bit different from most franchise style movies in that instead of being some unconnected story this is a retelling of one of the story arcs that appear in the One Piece manga and anime. Given the movie’s runtime there is little room for much other than a basic set up and a round of fights between Luffy and his friends versus Crocodile and his henchmen. This being said the movie manages to remain faithful to the original spirit of One Piece and so the franchise’s spirit of humor and adventure still shine through the edited movie. While this may not be a good movie to watch unless you are a One Piece fan but if you are this movie shouldn’t let you down.
