Lately the phrase … has left me in despair has been popping up around the anime community. I suggest you watch this show so you can find out what it means.

As she was skipping down the lane, Fura Kakura noticed a man trying to hang himself among the cherry trees. He rebuked her when she saved him asking her “What would happen if he had died?” The was her teacher Nozomu Itoshiki who by a cruel twist of fate has a name than can also be read as despair. Despair fits him and puts him at odds with the perpetually cheery Fura. They however are only two of the crazy characters that populate this show.

Of all the genres of anime I review I find comedy to be the hardest to rate fairly. With that being said Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei is one of the sharper knives in the comedy box so to speak. The usual episode focuses on some dark hypotheses of Itoshiki or the exploration of neurotic student of his. The average episode is split in two so whatever crazy idea is being explored at the moment won’t be dragged out forever. The style of humor is very dark but it is also one that takes no prisoners and tends to be sharp and clever with it’s delivery. Overall I found Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei to be one of the better comedy shows out there and I would recommend this to anybody whose humor has a dark streak.
