Seto no Hanayome is one of those romantic comedies that remember to keep in the comedy and add a helping of action while they are at it.

Michio Nagasumi went swimming in the sea but caught a leg cramp. Drowning, especially as far pit as he was would usually be fatal but we saved by a mermaid. That brought up another problem, being that there is a strict law saying that the existence of mermaids must be kept secret, punishable by death. However San (the mermaid who saved Nagasumi) doesn’t want that to happen so she offers to marry him as a compromise. While marrying a cute girl like San may sound like a good deal for Nagasumi he soon finds out that San is from a family of mermaid yakuza who aren’t happy with the marriage.

Even though romantic comedies seem to be an overcrowded genre sometimes one comes along with a gimmick that actually pays off. In the case of Seto no Hanayome the show isn’t over dependent on harem elements or San being a difficult or broken person but on the baggage that comes with being engaged to a yakuza mermaid. Without spoiling details I can tell you that Nagasumi usually ends up trying to avoid comical death in most episodes. The show is quite entertaining, sometimes funny and sometimes awesome like a fistfight with the terminator (which sort of happens sometime around episode 10). I recommend it.
