Ghost in the shell was a great and famous and great anime movie. A number of years later there is a sequel and while I don't know how famous it is or will be it is as good as the first one.

It has been an unspecified time since the last movie when the Major disappeared. As he is still with section 9 Batou has been assigned to a new case with Togusa trying and failing to fill the shoes of Batou's old partner. They are investigating a series of murders. These murders are all committed by gynoids (female androids) produced by the locus Solus company. The tricky thing is that the robots all commit suicide (self destruct) after killing their masters and there is no discernible flaw in the robot itself.

Ghost in the shell 2 is half action movie, half philosophical exploration and all visual spectacle. What makes this movie so good is that both aspects are not only done well but each keeps the other from swallowing the movie, the action keeps the viewers interest even he can't understand all the concepts and the philosophy keeps the movie from being shallow. I found the direction to be good even compared other Mamoru Oshii films (and if you take a look at my other reviews you will see I do like them). The plot of the movie unlike the first Ghost in the shell was only loosely derived from the Original manga source. Although some people may think of that as a drawback I see it as a benefit. The movie and the main Character Batou can be subtle one minute and then be unleashed like the fury of a storm the next. Such contradictions make the movie a classic in the making.
