Review My Hime aka Mai Hime Written by Warpshadow Rating very good

One of the more important reasons for the existence of reviews of any medium of artwork is the simple fact that you can not tell how good something is simply by it's premise. Some works fall flat and others (such as Mai Hime) are enjoyable beyond expectations.

Mai Tokiha and her brother Takumi are traveling to their new high school by boat. On the way there they see a girl floating in the water. With some help they pull her onboard but she is unconscious. Later another girl storms the ship looking for the girl Mai found and the two girls fight. They both display supernatural powers and destroy the ship Mai is on during their battle. What Mai doesn't know is that the two are Himes who have a destiny that is tied to the school that she is going to attend. She also doesn't know that the strange birthmark she has means she is a Hime as well.

Mai Hime is a mixture of Action, Comedy, Mystery, Drama and Romance with a huge cast of characters. What is unusual about the series is that it tries to juggle so many balls and manages to keep them all in the air. Mai Hime is what you would call Shonen anime with the abundance of cute girls with a fair portion of fan service but that doesn't feel like a crutch the way I found it to be in some other shows. Overall while the show may be a bit cliché (perhaps better for it since it does help in sorting out the multitude of elements in the show) Mai Hime is still a fun show to watch.
