There are those movies that movie critics but no one else will like. My beautiful girl Mari is that kind of movie (although it is kind of odd since technically am a movie critic and I didn’t like this movie).

Nam Woo is a boy who struggles with loss, especially the death of his father and the fact that his friend is moving away soon. One day he finds a marble in a bin that appears to be special but drops it and can’t find it again. Later finds the same marble at the top of an abandoned lighthouse. When he touches the marble he his transported to a magical land where he meets a furred flying girl named Mari.

My beautiful girl Mari is a movie with a beautiful and unique animation style which partially is due to the fact that the movie was made in Korea. If the story was as good as the animation this would have been a great movie but sadly that is not the case. None of the characters, especially Nam Woo are all that compelling. It would have been good if Mari and her magic world was explained or at least explored a bit more. As is this is a movie that is best suited to those interested in avant-garde animation and willing to tolerate dreadfully slow movies.
