School Days may look like a generic dating sim type anime show but if you watch it all the way through it has a very non generic and satisfying twist to it.

Every day on the way to school Makoto Itou took the train with a beautiful girl. He knows nothing about her other than she is a shy girl called Kotonoha Katsura. As a boy with no experience with relationships Makoto searches for advice in the form of a female friend Sekai Saionji. However an unexpected consequence arises as in the process of teaching Makoto how to properly approach Kotonoha Sekai develops feelings for him.

It is a truism that leads in romantic shows, particularly those in shows adopted from renai games tend to be weak willed and generally devoid of personality. School Days takes this truism to a pathological level by making Makoto a character really without merit as opposed to the usual nice guy that fills that role. The rest of the cast isn’t really all that admirable either. Although I hate to give away spoilers I can say unlike other romance shows where you wonder about who will end up with who one watches school days to await comeuppance of the main cast. On the other hand the plot is tighter and more purposeful than most of those in the same genre with no wasted episodes. Overall I found this show to be a good watch to anybody who is looking for a twist on the generic nice guy in shonen romance anime.
